Happy Birthday to YOU!

Aileen, a cousin of mine that works at "一風堂"
Aileen, please know that you are a damned good squatter (pictured above).

Happy fucking birthday Aileen.

My goodness, you are simply an angel in this photo. It is as if your humorous cynicism that I love so much has simply dissipated in this photo. Happy day to you my dear.

Next special someone: Señor Caleb.

You came to California from Kansas where cows were literally flying in the wind. Then you left, but you sure made us laugh when you were here. Come back please. Ok, thanks.

Suggestions from a Soft Core Bicycle Rider - Andrea

I shall only highlight a few here, so read her blog!
----
Hippie to Hipster: Andrea >> I have been getting super aggravated by the behavior of… well, everyone lately, especially around the subjects of bicycles, motor vehicles, and pedestrians.
Dear Motorized Vehicle Drivers,
  • Use your fucking turn signals. While waiting to cross I-35 Frontage on 4th St., us bicyclists and pedestrians waste a significant amount of time waiting on cars that neglect to inform us that they’re turning before the crosswalk. This is fucking annoying.
  • Don’t slow down when you see us at a crossing road, and then speed up after you see we’re stopped. Either keep at the same speed, or stop and let us go. You’re a fucking tease, and nobody likes a tease.
  • You all suck.

Dear Pedestrians,
  • When a bicyclist says “on your left,” don’t look and walk to the left. Move over to the right. Move quickly. You’re slowing me down.
  • Don’t congregate on the walking bridge and block both fucking lanes. I gotsta get through, assholes!
  • You all suck.

Dear Bicyclists,
  • You’re not better than everyone else, so stop being so pretentious or you won’t ever get laid.
  • Use your fucking turn signals.
  • Don’t yell at pedestrians for not getting out of the way soon enough to your liking.
  • Get some fucking lights, we can’t see you!
  • You all suck.

EENG: a group of educators that produce children whom fall over with excitement from every lesson.

Environmental Education for the Next Generation works in local elementary schools to bring in California Board of Education certified lesson plans on environmental education. The lesson for the week? Local and non-local foods.  This week's lesson at Bay View Elementary literally caused some of the kids to fall over with excitement! We had the class bring up, a third represented "local" while the rest were "non-local".  We passed a piece of fruit (per group) from "field to fork" and raced to see who could get it into a tummy first. The non-local team was pretty sad that they couldn't they had so many steps in between, "it's unfair!" Let's just say that they grasped the idea pretty well.

Dolmas [Vegan]

A quick recipe for delicious dolmas, ingredients: anything you have in your fridge.

Dolmas Recipe:

 >> 2 Onions
 >> 4 Carrots
 >> 2 cups of rice (preferably long white, as it absorbs the flavors better)
 >> 3 tomatoes, diced
 >> Half jar of grape leaves (Sadaf is a pretty good company)
 >> A hot peeper, simply because I like spice in everything
 >> Juice of 1 whole lemon
 >> A handful of mushrooms (I used dry, but fresh are even better!)
 >> A few cloves of garlic
 >> Salt + Pepper to taste ;)

Toast rice in ghee, until some pop. Add in some water and let cook for twenty minutes or so. You want the rice to be partially cooked, later you will cook the rest. Add in your tomatoes, and let sit.

Simultaneously as the rice is cooking, add in your onions and carrots and sauté! Add in the hot pepper and let cook, plop in the minced garlic and lemon juice. Once this is well cooked, combine with the rice and tomatoes. Mix well and get ready to stuff.

Dolmas mean "to stuff", so take the pickled leaves out the jar carefully and begin by placing a teaspoon to a tablespoon, depending on size at the base of the leaf.

Steam the bazillions of dolmas (stacking) for about 20 minutes and then let cool.
Served best cold and with the company of friends.

Being an "Adult"

Ok, it has now been two incidences within the past week where I have been called an "adult". Both of which shocked me, and made me giggle, (1) I was teaching 2nd graders at Bay View Elementary and one of the girls in my group asked me a question about being an "adult"; (2) one of my volunteers from this summer sent me an email requesting that I confirm her work as the "designated adult".

I'm sorry, I just do not consider myself an adult. In my opinion, being an adult means being serious all the time, going to bed early, preparing food for the whole busy week of work, getting upset when the house is dirty, grocery shopping, paying bills and coming home to cuddle with someone special. Gah-that is me.

The prominence of the privileged in the food-movement narrative, along with its “whiteness” (Slocum 2007), reflects the uneasy dualism between the trend of “quality food” for higher- income consumers and “other food” consumed by the masses (Goodman and Goodman 2007, 6).

What Child Is This? A Christmas Story

My lover made a special picnic basket, the goodies inside: water, little cups, strawberries and dates, two blankets and a book.

We watched the sunset while flipping through, randomly choosing a page here and there to read aloud to each-other.

Bed time came and I plopped out a gift I had made.

I gave him a book of my own, strategically disguised as a book about Christmas (I hate Christmas FYI).

He looked at it, then looked at me.

Finally, he opened it up and saw what was actually hidden.

He was quite surprised and thankful.

Twas a great surprise. Happy Valentines Day my Love.

Making Mud Pies

This is Maddi, we used to make mud pies together.

Now she is off in Cyprus..no big deal.

Journalism professor Michael Pollan, one of the mainstream media’s prominent food celebrities, asserts that “[t]he food movement coalesces around the recognition that today’s food and farming economy is ‘unsustainable’—that it can’t go on in its current form much longer without courting a breakdown of some kind, whether environmental, economic, or both. . . .” For Pollan, the food movement is “splintered” in its origins, “[unified] as yet by little more than the recognition that industrial food production is in need of reform because its so- cial/environmental/public health/animal welfare/gastronomic costs are too high” (Pollan 2010).

Granted, no amount of fresh produce will solve the under- lying socioeconomic problems of chronic unemployment, labor exploitation, crumbling public education, land and real estate speculation, and violence visited upon underserved communi- ties of color. But within a historicized framework of structural racism, the centrality of food to a community’s collective cul- tural identities provides links between racial identity and activ- ism (Pulido 2000). Food-justice activism is an important social change driver that, if allied with other, radical social move- ments, could seriously challenge the corporate food regime’s structural inequities.

A group of young kids explain how they would decide to get married [SOCIAL EXPERIMENT]

HOW WOULD YOU DECIDE WHO TO MARRY?
You got to find somebody who likes the same stuff. Like, if you like sports, she should like it that you like sports, and she should keep the chips and dip coming. - Alan, age 10

No person really decides before they grow up who they’re going to marry. God decides it all way before, and you get to find out later who you’re stuck with. - Kristen, age 10

WHAT IS THE RIGHT AGE TO GET MARRIED?
Twenty-three is the best age because you know the person FOREVER by then.  - Camille, age 10
No age is good to get married at. You got to be a fool to get married.   - Freddie, age 6
HOW CAN A STRANGER TELL IF TWO PEOPLE ARE MARRIED?
You might have to guess, based on whether they seem to be yelling at the same kids. - Derrick, age 8
WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR MOM AND DAD HAVE IN COMMON?
Both don’t want any more kids.    - Lori, age 8
WHAT DO MOST PEOPLE DO ON A DATE?
Dates are for having fun, and people should use them to get to know each other. Even boys have something to say if you listen long enough.   - Lynnette, age 8 (isn’t she a treasure)
On the first date, they just tell each other lies and that Usually gets them interested enough to go for a second date. - Martin, age 10
WHAT WOULD YOU DO ON A FIRST DATE THAT WAS TURNING SOUR?
I’d run home and play dead. The next day I would call all the newspapers and make sure they wrote about me in all the dead columns.  - Craig, age 9
WHEN IS IT OKAY TO KISS SOMEONE?
When they’re rich.  - Pam, age 7
The law says you have to be eighteen, so I wouldn’t want to mess with that. - Curt, age 7
The rule goes like this: If you kiss someone, then you should marry them and have kids with them. It’s the right thing to do. - Howard, age 8
IS IT BETTER TO BE SINGLE OR MARRIED?
I don’t know which is better, but I’ll tell you one thing. I’m never going to have sex with my wife. I don’t want to be all grossed out. - Theodore, age 8
It’s better for girls to be single but not for boys. Boys need someone to clean up after them. - Anita, age 9 (bless you child)
HOW WOULD THE WORLD BE DIFFERENT IF PEOPLE DIDN’T GET MARRIED?
There sure would be a lot of kids to explain, wouldn’t there? - Kelvin, age 8
HOW WOULD YOU MAKE A MARRIAGE WORK?
Tell your wife that she looks pretty, even if she looks like a truck.  - Ricky, age 10

California same-sex marriage ban ruled unconstitutional.

"Proposition 8 serves no purpose, and has no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and to officially reclassify their relationships and families as inferior to those of opposite-sex couples," said Judge Stephen Reinhardt in the majority opinion.
